The UK authorities has included an additional eleven new nations to its official advisory register regarding the threats of industrial alcohol poisoning from contaminated spirits.

This updated warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following evidence showing "a global increase in the frequency of reported cases" of toxic alcohol poisoning.

Only last month, the government had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing list, following multiple high-profile events including the tragic demise of six visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travellers are being cautions that as little as small amounts of toxic alcohol can result in vision loss or loss of life within 12 to 48 hours.

What is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous substance often employed in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not intended for drinking.

While it is inherently formed during the production of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the distillation process.

However in certain nations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to reduce expenses, and as it is tasteless and odourless, it is impossible to notice.

Authorities' Recommendations for Tourists

Authorities official Hamish Falconer stated that all travellers should know the indicators of industrial alcohol poisoning.

"If you're having drinks in foreign countries, choose reputable establishments and steer clear of homemade alcohol or unspecified beverages," Falconer advised.

"If something seems unusual, such as a headache that's way worse than normal or vision problems – get medical help right away."

The full list of countries noted as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
